“Learning Agility in Action” presents a series of 10 real-world case studies examining how organizations have applied learning agility in their talent management and leadership practices. The cases are from a variety of organizations, ranging from school systems to healthcare organizations to Fortune 500 companies such as Procter & Gamble, IBM, and Johnson & Johnson. Organizations are based in the United States as well as in China and Australia. All of the case studies were written by practitioners. They identify how the concept of learning agility was introduced into their organizations, difficulties and pleasant surprises they experienced, and successes and drawbacks they have observed. It is hoped those lessons will provide a road map of best practices for readers in their journeys to implement learning agility in their talent management practices and organizational cultures.Less

“Developing Learning Agile Behavior: A Model and Overview” focuses on how the development of learning agility creates a competitive advantage for leaders and their organizations. This chapter summarizes theories relevant to learning agility that have evolved over the past 50 years and the factors likely to influence learning agility development. An integrated learning agility model is proposed, the Learning Agile Process, consisting of (1) identifying the need for change, (2) planning for change, (3) implementing change, and (4) regulating and monitoring change. The model also outlines Learning Agile Behaviors that enable leaders to navigate this process: (1) observing, (2) doing, (3) connecting, (4) thinking, and (5) mobilizing. Thirty practical, learnable strategies for increasing learning agility are also provided. The chapter concludes with questions that remain to be answered in understanding the behaviors that contribute to agile learning.Less

The Age of Agility: Building Learning Agile Leaders and Organizations focuses on learning agility, one of the most important trends in the business world during the past decade. Some surveys have found it was the most frequently used criterion to measure leadership potential. Despite this popularity, there are fundamental questions that need to be answered, such as (a) What specifically is learning agility? (b) How many facets or dimensions does it have? (c) How do we measure it? and (d) Can it be developed? It appears that much of what is known about the construct of learning agility has been gleaned from its application by practitioners. While this knowledge is an extremely useful place to begin, there is an urgent need to undergird this understanding with science. The purpose of this edited book is to systematically examine the construct through a more scholarly lens. Over 50 authors—both academic researchers and talent management practitioners—have contributed to the contents. The goal is to enhance knowledge of learning agility, distilling, and synthesizing scientific evidence with best practices.Less
