This chapter addresses the weaknesses of INC Christianity and its competitive disadvantages when compared with religious groups organized around traditional congregations and denominations. We identify four primary weaknesses: oversold beliefs regarding the supernatural, a lack of capacity to produce stable community life, a limited capacity for influencing long-term social change, and an increased likelihood of corruption and scandal. We conclude that these competitive disadvantages grow out of INC Christianity’s primary competitive strength: its network structure.Less

It is undeniable that the government played a significant role throughout the history of Korea’s development. In analyzing the impact of government policy, it pays to emphasize the “how” approach rather than the “what” approach. The chapter details the developmental state and its motivations and policy implementations of each successive Korean presidential administration, from Rhee Syng-man to Park Geun-hye. Starting with a strong, militaristic government in the 1960s, Korea’s growth model has been remarked as the most “text-book-like” showcase of how to develop both capitalism and democracy. By pursuing different objectives in line with the respective challenges at the time, each president was able to turn an overwhelming competitive disadvantage into a competitive advantage.Less
