The Electronic Text Corpus of Sumerian Literature (ETCSL), a ten-year project to edit and analyse ancient Sumerian literature, came to an end on 31 August 2006. Like Egyptian, Sumerian is one of the world's oldest written literatures, with a classical corpus comprising some 500 compositions attested in many thousands of manuscripts from the early second millennium bc. This chapter reflects on how ETCSL has changed the practice of literary Sumerology, what it has not been able to achieve, and what could and should still be done. In particular, it argues that the collaborative working that projects like ETCSL foster has brought Sumerological practice much closer to ancient ideals of literacy — ideals that have themselves come to light through quantitative analysis of the ETCSL online corpus.Less

This chapter discusses works of authorship that are not written by a single known author such as anonymous works, works written under a pseudonym, and works for hire under copyright law. If the purpose of providing enhanced textual integrity protection is to safeguard the author's message, it would seem as though the author's identity should be preserved and publicly known. Yet, it is not possible to access authorship identity for all types of works. The chapter also explores the complexities of maintaining textual integrity in the context of collaborative works, which are becoming increasingly prevalent.Less

Since the sixteenth century, the humanities have been considered as the branch of “learning or literature concerned with human culture,” and have been under persistent critique from some quarters for two mutually paradoxical reasons. First, they are not relevant to present-day concerns. Second, their interest in relevancy devalues traditional works and approaches. How have changes in the structure and content of higher education, and, indeed, the goals and strategies of universities and colleges, affected the standing and nature of the humanities? What is the relation of the humanities today to the sciences, the social sciences, or the creative arts? What comes after the humanities—both within university culture, and in the professional, social, and political world? This chapter addresses the third question—What comes after the humanities?—by discussing the humanities as cultural accessory, the humanities center as symptom, and collaborative work and the new humanities—the humanities, so to speak, after the humanities.Less

Collaborative working is a well established principle of palliative care practice and interprofessional education in palliative care is gaining ground. Those who work in specialist palliative care are often called upon to teach members of other professional groups. While multidisciplinary teamwork has many benefits for patient care, the role-blurring it can cause some uncertainty over the way in which each professional group differs in its knowledge and skill base. This chapter aims to clarify interactions between occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and social workers, identifying their overlapping and distinctive roles; and to outline the pre-qualifying education provided for occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and social workers. It also describes the issues in palliative care education and training for occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and social workers, both at pre-qualifying and post-qualifying levels, relating these to the impact of the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) Guidance on Supportive and Palliative Care.Less

This essay discusses how feminist filmmaking techniques embody the explicit construction of identity through a shared and collaborative approach to subject participation and performance in relation to ideas around ‘voice’. It highlights the use of ‘hybrid’ practices and border-crossing in film and art processes. The author shows how strategies of participation and performance allow for non-binary complexities and voice-making to emerge.Less

This chapter explores the complexities of working on jointly funded digital cultural heritage projects and the challenges and benefits of partnership collaborations. In the Digital Building Heritage project, researchers at De Montfort University worked with community partners in order to bring history back to life through the use of digital technologies in 3D computer animation, 3D printing, 3D modelling, and mobile geo-location. An evaluation of the researchers' experience of co-production and collaborative working highlights the importance of setting clear, feasible objectives and outcomes according to the resources available, including plans for user testing, maintaining regular communication, consideration of proposed digital product usage, and promotion. The chapter then considers the way in which this type of practice-based research can lead to academic outcomes suitable for audit programmes like the UK's Research Excellence Framework.Less

This chapter discusses the process of developing collaborative working relationships with a particularly hard-to-reach population; rural-dwelling older men with dementia. It draws on theoretical knowledge around masculinities as well as reflexive practice undertaken in rural areas within the UK to detail potential challenges facilitators may be faced with when engaging this population. It concludes by providing a list of recommendations for facilitators to consider when delivering community initiatives to rural-dwelling older men with dementia.Less

This chapter examines online prosocial behavior, defined as voluntary intentional actions, taking place on the Internet, to benefit others with no expectation of personal reward. The focus is on understanding prosocial behavior in public online contexts including support group discussion forums, service projects, open collaborative work projects, and citizen science projects. The chapter discusses three main classes of variables that affect prosocial behaviors: Attributes of the online context, individual attributes and motivations, and interaction processes. The chapter describes studies of prosocial behavior in a variety of contexts that draw on diverse theories such as motivation and personality theories, Social Learning Theory, and Social Identity Theory to provide a general overview of how, why, and to what degree people engage in online prosocial behavior. Evidence of the value both to the direct providers of prosocial contributions and their beneficiaries as well as to society at large is presented. The chapter concludes with an overview of opportunities for furthering research on online prosocial behavior by extending the inquiry to include more varied contribution contexts, new technological contexts for helping, and a greater diversity in research methods.Less

Kathleen Jamie has long been interested in the complex intersections of personal and national identity. This chapter takes up the theme of the individual poetic voice working in collaboration with other voices - other artists, writers, and members of local and national communities. The discussion focuses on two volumes, A Flame in Your Heart, a collection of verse co-written with fellow poet Andrew Greig, and her most recent volume, Frissure, a mixed media work composed in collaboration with the visual artist Brigid Collins. This chapter argues that Jamie is a poet with a strong sense of place and social connection. Her strikingly original voice is paradoxically one that emerges out of (and in) dialogue with others.Less

This chapter analyzes the political economy of digital critical editions and the development of research networks, as well as the ecological environment and the concrete human resources in digital critical edition. The first part builds on the scope of scholarly editing's “political economy in a pre-digital era,” and describes the human resources context that has followed the migration of critical edition to the digital world. Meanwhile, the second part discusses the impacts of collaborative work, human networks, open software ideology, and resource sharing on the new political economy of digital scholarly edition. Particular attention is given to the role of institutions such as publishers, research organizations and universities, and scientific networks in this new production environment.Less

Creative Team Work: Developing Rapid, Site-Switching Ethnography is much more than a description of a new way of doing rapid ethnography to capture the rich complexity and contradictions of social relations, although it is certainly that. It is about the imagination, stimulation, and reflection that can come with international, interdisciplinary teams sharing the development, application, analysis, and dissemination of research. Although the book is based on a large, seven-year project studying care homes to search for promising practices and is guided by feminist political economy, the lessons we have learned are relevant for everyone undertaking empirical investigation. All research needs to consider theory, the organization of information, ethics, and dissemination, for example. The specific techniques and approaches we discuss can be applied to a wide range of qualitative methods and are not exclusive to this kind of ethnography. By dissecting our experiences together and uniting chapters through the theme of creative, reflexive team work, the book considers issues and methods of interest to all those struggling through the research process, with or without team support. Although some of our strategies may not work for everyone, and some did not work for us, we have identified areas that need to be addressed in research projects big and small, especially in those interested in putting research to work for change.Less

This chapter sums up the key findings of this study on the role of visual arts of the fiction of French author Michel Butor. It discusses some of the roles of visual arts in Butor's fiction which include providing cultural coordinates in the different quests undertaken by the characters, universalizing the central themes of the texts and acting as a counterpoint to the intertextual material. This chapter also considers the impact of Butor's interest in the visual arts on the formal organisation of his subsequent texts and on the collaborative working practices that have figured so prominently in the texts produced since the 1960s.Less
