The authorities in Nantes watched helplessly as France was engulfed in civil war. The outcome of war was not only a new decisiveness by the crown and the city's elites to assert their authority separately, but also in concert, to restore order to religious and secular affairs. The 1560s and early 1570s were a period of new initiatives in crown–city relations, for the more efficient administration of the kingdom, a result of the crisis of the early civil wars. This process of declining confidence, followed by the repositioning of authority within the city of Nantes, is the subject of this chapter. While royal authority was fissured by the military crisis, its administration in Nantes held firm. At the local level, day-to-day order and respect for royal authority were maintained.Less

In this chapter Jussi Parikka discusses air pollution and waste as media, data and environmental art created in the contemporary smart city. The way these, otherwise unwanted, elements are sensed and perceived unveil the political subjectivity in an urban context and as data feedback from various readings, understandings and governance of the city. This sort of a materiality is one that is about folds between architectures, data and the chemistry of the air -a sort of a media ecology of multiple materialities. The creative power of smog that intertwines old computational infrastructures of urban pollution and new infrastructures such as monitors, programming and data storage is explained. The chapter focuses on urban environments as defined by the emergence of new forms of measurement of the city -and its airborne pollution - through smog sensors. The smart, modern city as defined through its unwanted elements, in this case, pollution and waste, are further discussed.Less

This chapter examines the contrast between street vending and city regulatory responses in Vancouver, Canada during two time periods—the 1970s and the 2010s. The comparison of “hippy” vending in the 1970s and “hip” food carts and trucks four decades later illustrates the contradictory impulses that shape regulation of commercial activity on city streets. First, there is a process of “formalization” that seeks to tame the informality and messiness of street vending through new rules, standards and regulations. But by the 2010s, a second, contradictory, impulse appears: an embrace of informality reflecting new ideas about “vital” city streets and identifying street vending, in the form of food trucks and carts, as “hip.” But the apparent embrace of the informal has unfolded through highly formalized procedures, and the vitality associated with vending in Vancouver is acceptable precisely because it has been (re)introduced in a highly formalized, regulated form.Less

This book provides a scholarly history of Lucca in the 15th century, from the overthrow of the Guinigi despotism to the beginning of the French invasion of Italy. Thoroughly grounded in the archives, the study covers a wide range of important themes and topics in Lucchese history. The book explores both the politics and the economy of the city, examining city governance and relations with its subject communities. It sets Lucca in its regional context as an important city-republic and as a neighbour of the large and powerful city of Florence.Less

This chapter provides a brief background on the role of sustainable development in the governance of cities. The first section describes how Mayor Ken Livingstone made the first political advances towards sustainable development in London. The second section examines the different dimensions of sustainable development discourse in London, situating it within its historical context and, in particular, focusing on the period of economic austerity since 2008. The third section evaluates contemporary sustainable development discourse in London. The last section outlines the content, structure, and key arguments of the book.Less
