This chapter presents some concluding thoughts. It shows that all fiber pathways are precisely arranged into bundles that link specific brain regions, and in many instances there is topographical organization within the bundles themselves, determined by the site of origin of the fibers in the cerebral cortex. The association, commissural, and corticothalamic fibers convey information in a bidirectional manner. The dichotomy of cerebral function and association pathways and the significance of the current work are discussed.Less

This chapter shows how the firm can use marketing-finance fusion to choose bundling strategies to increase its performance. Topics covered include: how to price interdependent products, how and when to use cross-couponing strategies, how to allow for production capacity constraints, and how to reward managers of multidivisional firms when cross-couponing strategies are used. It analyzes why many bundling strategies fail in the marketplace; in addition, it proposes new metrics for measuring consumers' willingness to pay for products and bundles.Less

This introductory chapter presents an outline of the metaphysics of identity and individuality, which emphasizes the conceptual distinction between individuality and distinguishability. The Principle of Identity of Indiscernibles effectively reduces the former to the latter, but notions of haecceity, ‘transcendental individuality’, and ‘space-time’ individuality are also presented, with the aim of laying the groundwork for the subsequent considerations of identity and individuality in the quantum context. In particular, as identity in higher-order logic is defined in terms of indistinguishability and ‘countable’ objects which feature in set theory are typically taken to be those which have well-defined identity conditions, this metaphysical framework will underpin the rest of the discussions in this book.Less

Based on the work of Orlov, Kawamata, and others, this chapter shows that the (numerical) Kodaira dimension and the canonical ring are preserved under derived equivalence. The same techniques can be used to derive the invariance of Hochschild cohomology under derived equivalence. Going one step further, it is shown that the nefness of the canonical bundle is detected by the derived category. The chapter also studies the relation between derived and birational (or rather K-) equivalence. The special case of a central conjecture predicts that two birational Calabi-Yau varieties have equivalent derived categories.Less

The main goal of this work is to provide a metaphysical account of properties and of how they are related to concrete particulars. On the broadest level, this work is a defense of tropes and of trope bundle theory as the best accounts of properties and objects, respectively, and, second, a defense of a specific brand of trope nominalism, Natural Class Trope Nominalism. Each of these tasks is pursued separately, with the first Part of this work acting as a general introduction and defense of tropes and trope bundle theory, and the second Part acting as the more specific defense of Natural Class Trope Nominalism. In Part 1 it is argued that there are tropes. Part 1 also provides an outline of what tropes can do for us metaphysically, while remaining neutral between different theories of tropes. Included in Part 1 are an account of the universal–particular distinction, an argument for the existence of tropes based on the phenomenon of moving properties, the development of a trope bundle theory of objects and a trope-based solution to the problems of mental causations. The second Part presents a fuller picture of what a trope is by way of Natural Class Trope Nominalism, according to which a trope's nature is determined by membership in natural classes of tropes. In addition, in Part 2 a defense is developed of Natural Class Trope Nominalism against what have been thought to be fatal objections to this view, a defense grounded in property counterpart theory without modal realism.Less

This chapter discusses the issue of the changing boundaries of system integration competencies between different actors. It is argued that many complex, knowledge-intensive innovations are not only systemic in the sense of requiring many components and interactions, but they must also be analysed as a situation where final demand requires a bundling of goods and services. Demand therefore must be analysed as an integrated set of goods and services. A multi-sectoral comparison is made, as the bundling of goods and services is visible in such diverse areas as building and construction, health care management, biotechnology, and telecommunication infrastructures.Less

Some of the world's leading companies are changing the strategic focus of their activities and following a similar path to success. Increasingly, firms compete by selling complex products and services as integrated solutions that address the needs of large business or government-owned customers. This chapter presents empirical findings within a conceptual framework which examines how the firms are changing the strategic focus of their activities, adapting to new positions in the value chain, and developing new sets of capabilities. To provide products and services as integrated solutions, firms are building core ‘systems integration’ capabilities to provide world-class products with equipment sourced from different vendors, and moving into the provision of services to maintain, finance, and operate a product throughout its life cycle.Less

This chapter considers Hume's proposal that we are made up entirely of particular mental states and events: the bundle view. An argument for the bundle view is based on the claim that the traditional idea of substance is dismissed. The bundle view is then shown to follow naturally from widely held claims about diachronic and synchronic personal identity. Reid's objection that bundles of thoughts cannot be thinkers is elaborated and endorsed. It is then argued that the bundle view cannot easily avoid the thinking‐animal problem. There follows a critical discussion of two related views: that we are bundles of universals and that we are something like computer programs. Both are found to be hopeless.Less

The chapter begins the task of elucidating Berkeley's active/passive distinction by focusing on his understanding of the concept of existence. The latter is elucidated by mapping Berkeley's understanding of its relationship to concepts such as simplicity, unity, identity, and substance. Berkeley's view of existence is contrasted with the competing views of Descartes and Locke. Throughout the chapter, the bundle-theory interpretation of spirits is used as a stalking horse and shown to be incompatible with Berkeley's account of existence as it applies to spirits.Less

The coherence of Berkeley's account of spirits is defended against the charge that they cannot be, on the one hand, simple substances and, on the other hand, both active and passive in nature. It is argued that Berkeley's spirits must be understood to be a kind of hybrid of Lockean persons and Cartesian simple substances. This chapter is a second trip into the realm of Kähler geometry, focusing on Kähler-Einstein metrics, in particular positive scalar curvature Kähler-Einstein metrics on compact Fano orbifolds, which gives rise to the famous Monge-Amfipere equation. Some basic techniques such as the continuity method, Tian's invariant, and multipliers ideal sheaves are introduced. These provide for proving various existence results concerning orbifold Kähler-Einstein metrics. The Matsushima-Lichnerowicz theorem and Futaki invariant are briefly discussed in the section on obstructions.Less

This chapter describes Sasakian geometry in low dimensions. In dimension three there is a complete classification; dimension five is large enough to be interesting, yet small enough to hope for some partial classification. We concentrate on the simply connected case, as there we can rely on the Smale-Barden classification. In terms of Sasakian structures, the main focus is on the case of positive Sasakian structures. The chapter describes several remarkable theorems of Kollfiar showing how positivity severely restricts the topology, in particular the torsion of a manifold which admits a positive Sasakian structure. The method heavily depends on the algebraic geometry of log del Pezzo surfaces with cyclic Du Val singularities.Less
