This chapter looks at certain community programs that were designed to form a specific idea of community as a part of the state. These programs are a part of Community Mothers, which has a significant impact on the lives of rural households and families in Buenos Aires. This chapter examines the conceptualizations of community that can be associated with Community Mothers. It devotes one section to the role of violence in a number of social relations, such as government decisions and economic production, and the blurring of the boundaries between Black and Indigenous communities.Less

This chapter presents evidence and a theory to understand the current topography of the business-politics relationship in India. Such a theory helps us understand a dual movement: the emergence of a new developmental state as well as the movement of business inside democratic institutions even as India’s political actors engage in numerous business activities. The state has become more porous as business has moved into diverse institutions. Both corrupt and legitimate development activities take place in the shadow of this porous state. The chapter maps the presence of business actors within legislative bodies, parties, independent agencies, and other public agencies to document this trend. Joint-decision arenas such as public private partnerships are key to this business-state compact. Brokers and agents such as key personalities and business associations mediate and move between blurred boundaries of state and regulatory institutions. Politicians have become businessmen and create both laws and invest in business enterprises.Less

This chapter discusses the Breathing Light Illusion. The Breathing Light Illusion is a size and brightness illusion elicited by the self-motion of the observer. The stimulus consists of a circular white spot that is presented on a black background, characterized by blurred boundaries. The blurred spot, which in static view seems to glow and exhibits a self-luminance appearance, is perceived as wider, brighter, and more diffuse when it is approached but smaller, darker, and sharper when one recedes from it. A possible explanation of the phenomenon is related to the superimposition of the afterimage on the physical stimulus during dynamical viewing.Less

This chapter addresses American composer Joan Tower’s Up High (2010). This is an extended, warmly lyrical song of considerable charm and poignancy. It is couched in an accessible and tuneful musical language and carries an uplifting and idealistic message. The music gradually becomes more complex and modernistic as it progresses, especially in the full and varied piano textures which run continuously throughout. Although the piece was written for the admirable soprano Dawn Upshaw, its range is quite low at times and there is much concentration on the middle register. This means that the singer’s tone must be secure and well controlled, with a quality that can cut through the piano at its busiest.Less
