A bibliography of the complete works of Archie Brown is presented from the mid-1960s to the present. These provide valuable insights on the nature of the Soviet Union, its transition from Communism, and on post-Soviet Russia’s ambiguous process of democratisation. Annotations are divided into nine thematic categories: links between Scottish and Russian enlightenments; Czechoslovakia, 1963-1968, and Eastern Europe under Soviet power; Soviet politics pre-1985; the Gorbachev Era; Russian politics and transition, 1992-2004; works spanning the Soviet and post-Soviet eras, 1917-2004; British Politics; other writings; and examples of substantial reviews and review articles.Less

This chapter discusses the concept of a database and its specific application to crystallography. Crystallographic databases generally contain bibliographic and experimental information, which in most cases includes the positions of atoms in the crystal structure together with other data allowing the structure to be represented graphically, analysed geometrically, and manipulated. Computer searches may be carried out based on any of the information stored, if the associated software provides the relevant functionality; these may include matching particular structural fragments based on chemical connectivity, as well as individual experimental and data items. Results may then be subjected to detailed statistical analysis or other treatment. Some possible uses are described. The crystallographic databases available are the Cambridge Structural Database, the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database, CrystMet for metals and related materials, and the Protein Data Bank and associated nucleobase database.Less

This book focuses on the sociolinguistic consequences of historical contact between indigenous Irish peoples and newer English and Scottish settlers in what is now the territory of Northern Ireland (NI). The contact varieties that resulted represent the oldest L2 ‘Englishes’ globally. Moreover, the degree of admixture from English, Irish and Scots in the contemporary dialects of NI reflects various external forces. Naturally, these varieties share certain structural features with sister Celtic Englishes and indeed with other vernacular Englishes globally (partly because of extensive emigration from NI post-1700 and partly due to universal tendencies of various types). However, there are other linguistic traits that seem to be unique and therefore essentially local. Irish English, Volume 1: Northern Ireland aims to provide insights into the evolution of language in 21st century NI and to promote an understanding of linguistic diversity in this region in the context of World Englishes.Less

In this book, Mark Blum offers a critical look at the thought and impact of the late thirteenth‐century Buddhist historian Gyōnen (1240–1321) and the emergent Pure Land school of Buddhism founded by Hōnen (1133–1212). Blum also provides a clear and fully annotated translation of Gyōnen's Jōdo Hōmon Genrushō, the first history of Pure Land Buddhism, and his only known surviving Pure Land text. Part I of the study, Gyōnen and Kamakura Pure Land Buddhism, largely concerns Gyōnen himself. One of his most lasting impacts was as fashioner of a view of Buddhist history that Japanese society was to find quite persuasive for the next 600 years, and it is the author's thesis that he should be regarded as the first proper Buddhist historian in Japan and that the Genrushō should be seen as an important expression of his historical perspective. The Genrushō is both a philosophical inquiry into the historical nature of orthodox Pure Land doctrine and a remarkable record of people of religious impact in this tradition who actively led lineage ‘branches’ of the Jōdo school (Jōdoshū) during the Kamakura period. Part II, The Origins and Development of the Pure Land Teaching, presents a full translation, the first in any modern language (including Japanese) of the Genrushō itself. Detailed annotation is provided in notes to the numerous people, texts, monasteries, geographical locations, and doctrinal concepts named in the text. Part III is a facsimile of the xylograph edition upon which the translation is based. There are three appendices: Appendix A is a concordance to the translation; Appendix B looks at Gyōnen's personal Pure Land beliefs; and Appendix C provides a list of Gyōnen's known extant works. There are two bibliographies for the book, one of primary and the other of secondary sources, and also a select glossary.Less

The book is divided into the conventional categories of gospels, acts, epistles, and revelatory texts. A long subsection deals with stories of Jesus’ infancy and childhood. Another section deals with fragmentary gospel texts on papyrus. The bulk of the book is given over to second‐century legends of individual apostles. Another section covers apocryphal acpocalypses. An appendix gives a selection of stories about the Virgin Mary's assumption and dormition. Each translated text is prefaced with an introduction and select bibliography. This volume is the first published study to bring together a variety of materials which represent the life and works of Sir Granville Bantock (1868-1946), British composer, arranger, editor, music department administrator, competitive singing promoter and adjudicator, world traveler, lover of life, literature and philosophy, radio talk presenter, champion of works of other rising British composers over his own, husband and father. His works alone total over 600, yet many remain in manuscript housed for access at the Cadbury Special Collections Library on the campus of the University of Birmingham. The reader will find citations of reviews of his music, reviews of performances during his lifetime and beyond as well as reviews of recordings both then in now in contemporary and modern newspapers and journals. Commercial and archival recordings are noted and locations given. Manuscripts that remain extant are identified and located. Up to and including 10 representative national and international live performances are noted for each work with names and venues provided. Within the Works section of the book are subcategories by medium for which they were composed for easy identification with minimal information the reader has at hand prior to opening the volume. The sketchbooks are also detailed with what materials are contained in each. Within the Bibliography section are citations of obituaries, writings by GB, dissertations, and pertinent files at: the BBC, Worcestershire Archive, Liverpool Record Office and Trinity Laban Conservatoire to name a few.Less

The Introduction sets out the methodological approach of the book: it draws upon a tradition of regional historical studies, much indebted to economic and historical geography, to investigate the reasons why and methods whereby cities in an urban belt of central Europe constructed landed territories. It is not concerned to trace the political, juridical, and cultural achievements of medieval city‐states, especially those in Italy. The study is firmly comparative, but does not presume that a single archetype of the medieval city‐state existed. Constraints of space prevent detailed treatment of regional economic systems, a topic on which much research remains to be undertaken. The book is divided into broad chronological chapters spanning around 150 years, the last of which examines thematically the capacity of city‐states to survive by transformation and adaption.Less

Theories of the Text is a comprehensive account of the changing practice of bibliography, textual criticism, and scholarly editing in the light of the diverse currents of contemporary critical theory. It offers both an introduction to the history of textual debate and an account of the current debates over such issues as authorial intention, textual organicism, the socialization of the text, and intertextuality. Despite the positivist tradition of textual scholarship, the author argues, such work is a hermeneutic activity taking place within certain (usually unacknowledged) social and cultural conceptual constraints.Less

Despite the positivist tradition of textual scholarship, the author argues, such work is a hermeneutic activity taking place within certain (usually unacknowledged) social and cultural conceptual constraints.

This chapter is a bibliography of Kierkegaard's works which have been translated in English, from the years 1843 to 1964. The list includes his major works, such as Either/Or, some of which have seen multiple editions over the course of over a century. It also includes selections and anthologies, most notably derived from his journals and miscellaneous writings. Most of his major works were published by Princeton University Press, though publishers from both sides of the Atlantic were able to produce translations of Kierkegaard's oeuvre. The chapter also briefly takes note of forthcoming editions of some of his translated works.Less

Lewis Theobald's own edition of William Shakespeare has received almost unanimous approval from subsequent, and especially from twentieth-century, historians of the subject. T. R. Lounsbury's lengthy defence of Theobald in The First Editors of Shakespeare was followed by R. F. Jones's Lewis Theobald, which first made clear the extent of Theobald's indebtedness to the textual-critical techniques of classical philology; later, more general surveys of the field, such as those of R. B. McKerrow and Brian Vickers, have singled out Theobald's criticism for praise; most recently, Peter Scary's full-length book has made an extensive and thoroughly documented case for Theobald's attention to Shakespearian bibliography and for his anticipation of the methods and tenets of the New Bibliographers. It is evident that much of Theobald's theory and practice mark a significant break with the previous course of criticism of English texts.Less

The book aims to show that bibliography is not a safe positivist redoubt resistant to the onslaughts of post-structuralism, culture criticism, and so on, but that the gates are already open and the traffic two-way. It is the author's contention that only by seeing the field whole can one begin to perceive the theory that is embedded in practice, those generally unacknowledged principles that drive both editorial and critical decisions. Lastly, the book decodes the symptoms present in this cumulative history and interrogates the practices so that they may reveal their theories. Throughout, the book maintains that all practice, even that which asserts its empirical independence from theory, is, in fact, empowered by a theory or theories: theories of the text.Less

This chapter examines general bibliographic sources. In developing a search strategy, an awareness of general bibliographic tools and online searching strategies and procedures is useful. Just as each book is indexed and organized differently, each online database works differently. These differences factor into the development of search strategies. In addition, almost any research project will employ library catalogs and bibliographies. Library catalogs may include the collection of a single library or of many libraries, and bibliographies range widely in scope and size. National bibliographies are an important research resource, and those that cover discrete periods of time are often very useful. Meanwhile, many publishers, historical societies, scholars, libraries, and individuals have created websites that contain material of interest to legal researchers. When considering such sites, researchers should think about how to locate them, how reliable they are, whether they will exist in the future, and how they can be used.Less
