This chapter gives a brief background on the development of the Wari Empire as it expanded from the Ayacucho Basin of central Peru to various regions across the Peruvian Andes. The author makes a case for using bioarchaeological methods to study the archaeological body to investigate both its physiological aspects and the ways it was used as political and social currency. A brief theoretical overview of the book is also presented, describing a perspective from which imperial authority is seen as a strong structuring force, while also recognizing the individual agency of those who were integrated into Wari society and those who were subjugated by Wari. The chapter concludes with a brief summary of each subsequent chapter.Less
