This introductory chapter presents the objectives of the book and its scope of analysis in terms of the extent, pattern, and character of capital formation and its contribution to South Korea's economic development and structural changes in the economy after the Korean War. This reveals a unique experience compared to that of other countries with similar backgrounds, especially those in Asia. The chapter also notes the reasons why the study of economic development and capital formation is essential to understanding the path of South Korea's economic development. The approach followed in this study and the nature of data sources used in this book are discussed.Less

This introductory chapter discusses the purpose of the book and its scope of analysis relative to the extent, pattern, and character of capital formation and its contribution to Korea's three stages of economic development and transformation. It identifies the reasons why the study of capital formation and economic transformation in Korea during the 70-year period is essential to understanding the path of the country's economic transformation. The chapter emphasizes the three major groups of players in Korea, namely, the Koreans, the Japanese, and foreigners (those other than Japanese and Korean nationals) whose role or lack of role was significant. The approach followed in this study is more behavioral and analytical than historical; the nature of the sources of data used in this book is also noted.Less

This chapter describes how social workers from social welfare and child protection services can contribute more actively towards helping children in families who face poverty. It also explores the social workers’ reflections and descriptions of what they do as practices that contain special views of or ideas about children. The theme is discussed from a discourse analytical approach, identifying the relevance of three different discourses: children’s rights in terms of parents’ responsibilities; case processing rules guiding the practice in relation to children; and children as subjects in their own life. The expression of an individual has been given a broader meaning because it has been placed in a larger context and has been considered in relation to discourses at the social level. The discourses describe trends in ideas that influence the formation of opinions and ways of thinking among people.Less

The concept of an authoritative recording is discussed, that is, that a recording with sufficient properties may instantiate a composition in lieu of an officially notated version. The book’s method of listing and categorizing Parker compositions then follows. For the latter, Parker’s compositions are divided into seven groups, which proceed from fully composed 32-bar pieces to those works with minimal music.
