This chapter introduces the book by providing an overview of the New Dynamics of Ageing Programme, which comprised a total of 35 projects covering most of the major issues of ageing from a multi-disciplinary perspective. The chapter will then introduce individual chapters by summarising their subject matter and arguments. Finally, all of the projects supported by the Programme are listed together with their Principal Investigators.Less

This innovative study of the baby boomer generation, who are now entering old age, breaks new ground in ageing research. This post-war cohort has experienced a range of social, cultural, and medical changes in regard to their notions of body, from the introduction of the Pill and the decoupling of sex and procreation to the H-Bomb and Earthrise. Yet, paradoxically, ageing is also universal. This exciting book reflects the intersection of time, ageing, body and identity to give a more nuanced and enlightened understanding of the ageing process.Less

This chapter concludes the book by first extracting the key findings from each of the preceeding chapters. This provides an easy to access summary of the main policy-orientated implications of one half of the NDA Programme (to match the similar summary in volume 1). Then the overall contribution of the NDA Programme is assessed briefly under the headings, including multi-disciplinarity, Research methods and theory building. In addition to the authors’ personal evaluation evidence is drawn from an independent one.Less

This provides a unique summary of the major policy-orientated implications of one half of the NDA Programme. Then some of the main thematic connections between the chapters are highlighted. These include the insights they provide into the changing dynamics of ageing, the importance of design for better ageing and their demonstration of how to conduct multi-disciplinary research on ageing.Less

This chapter is divided into two parts. The first describes the effect of Pat Rabbitt's influence in encouraging the first author to use the increasingly sophisticated methods of ageing research to answer questions about the fundamental characteristics of working memory, together with reflections on why so little of this work reached publication. The second part presents a brief review of the literature on working memory and ageing, followed by an account of more recent work attempting to apply the traditional method of experimental dissociation to research on normal ageing and Alzheimer's disease. The discussion suggests that even such simple methods can throw light on both the processes of ageing and the understanding of working memory.Less
