This next chapter probes into the very heart of conformity—suburbia—and connects this impulse to the developing arc of zombie narratives. The chapter mines both Fido and The Stepford Wives for the depersonalizing forces of suburbia and traces its connection to both the post-human and the zombie. It argues that the sterilizing effects of repetitive standardization and mimicry have found their way off the drive-in screens and into the handheld technology that comes standard on most teenage human models, representing the shift from an era of “pod” people to one of “iPod” people.Less
