This chapter begins the story of the American–British–German business and political relationship in the year 1900. It assesses the prevailing attitudes toward this transitional period in terms of press commentary, before considering political and economic relations in the age of late-nineteenth-century imperialism. While positive visions of the future tended to predominate, the papers also contained evidence of the conflicts that were smoldering within the societies of Britain, Germany, and the United States. From here, the chapter turns to a rich archival source for the extent of the European–American constellation in the form of accounts made by financial expert Frank Vanderflip as well as by journalist William Stead.Less

This chapter discusses how alliances were formed between reform movements and journalism around the issue of white slavery and child prostitution in England. It then explores the process by which a crusading journalist, temperance activists, rescue workers, and social purity reformers, borrowed conventions from each other, sketching in theories, narratives, and methods, forming and publicizing beliefs about widespread sex slavery. The exposé of William T. Stead—the evangelical editor of Pall Mall Gazette—redefined prostitution in English popular culture and reform movements, paving the way to the creation of a productive synergy between journalistic and reformist domains.Less

This chapter explores the beginnings of reform journalism around white slavery in the United States. It explains how British mass culture helped reshape the landscape of American moral reform movements in the late nineteenth century. These reform movements would take on a complex national form as it was developed in a dialogue with American journalism, which it came to influence during this period. William T. Stead’s exposé changed American Journalism via a circuitous route: it sparked interest among the great number of female evangelical reformers to direct a number of their reform activities at the press itself. The chapter considers the relationships formed between the Gilded Age press and women’s moral reform movements and the role these interactions played in creating particular narrative styles, objects of inquiry, and the character and constitution of media audiences and practices to come.Less
