Thayer enrolled in Oxford to do postgraduate work. There, he reconnected with T. S. Eliot and the two became friends. He also met, and probably had a relationship with, Vivien Haigh-Wood, who would eventually marry Eliot. At this time, Thayer began reading modern authors more widely and met Ezra Pound, Bertrand Russell, and Raymond Mortimer. He also befriended Valentine Farrar, who joined the armed services to fight in the Great War. The two exchanged many letters on art, literature, and religion. Farrar, like Thayer's friend Alan Seeger, died in the war.Less
