This chapter examines and focuses on conciliarism and its contribution to the theory of monarchy, with reference to arguments deployed and developed from the mid-15th century onwards. Aside from examining the contributions of conciliarism, the chapter also examines beyond the conciliarist tradition in two ways. First, attention is given to some medieval thinkers, notably Gabriel Biel who examined the conciliarist theory closely. Secondly, some relatively neglected aspects of papalist response to the conciliarist challenge in the early 16th century is given with particular reference to the work of Tommaso de Vio.Less
