Stoics gave Socratic self-knowledge some distinct characteristics, of which some are anthropological, some ethical and political, and some epistemological. A focus on Roman Stoics and especially on Marcus Aurelius reveals the most original feature of late Stoicism: the self-dialogue, which becomes the vehicle for practicing philosophy and gaining self-knowledge: The Meditations are unique because they are the first self-dialogue of an author with himself.
