Chapter 4 discusses one traditional form of assessment – Paper-and-pencil tests. The chapter first provides an overview of the characteristics and functions of this kind of assessment. Some step-by-step procedures are given for developing a test. Although this form of assessment is restricted to testing students cognitively, tests can be constructed in a way that a broad range of learning outcomes can be assessed. Some examples for constructing test items are given and some construction guidelines are provided to assist teachers in developing test items.Less

Forensic mental health experts are frequently asked to determine the nature and severity of cognitive, neurological, and/or psychological deficits of individuals and bear considerable responsibility in differentiating individuals with true deficits/diseases from those that are malingering. To that end, there are number of tests and measures that aid in the assessment of (a) malingering of cognitive deficits (e.g., performance curve analysis, validity indices [e.g., F-scale, NIM scale], symptom validity tests [e.g., Portland Digit Recognition Test, Test of Memory Malingering, Validity Indicator Profile, Rey 15-Item Test]), general response style (e.g., Miller Forensic Assessment of Symptoms Test), (b) malingering of psychiatric disorders/symptoms (e.g., Structured Inventory of Malingered Symptomatology, Structured Interview of Reported Symptoms), and (c) malingering of personality disorders (e.g., Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2, Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory–Third Edition, and Personality Assessment Inventory).Less
