This review of Tariq Ramadan’s The Arab Awakening: Islam and the new Middle East was published in the Times Literary Supplement, 12 October 2012 – at a time when there were still hopes that the “Arab Awakening” would lead to a new era of progress in the Middle East. It attempts to elucidate Professor Ramadan’s complex intellectual position – where his loyalty to Islamic orthodoxy clashes with the humanities as they are understood in the West – and in particular his relationship to the Muslim Brothers, which is more critical than is often assumed. At the same time it defends Ramadan against unjust criticisms and salutes his personal courage. A prefatory note adds up-to-date information about some of Ramadan’s political interventions since 2012.Less

This Chapter describes the case of Tariq Ramadan, the Swiss-born academic and commentator on Islamic matters, who was refused a non-immigrant visa in 2005 to enter the USA in order to accept a professorship in peace studies. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) took up his case. Though it is probable that the real reason for his exclusion was opposition to Ramadan’s political opinions, the reason given was that between 1998 and July 2002 he had made donations totalling the equivalent of US$940 to a charity registered in Switzerland (the Association de Secours aux Palestiniens). In August 2003 this charity was designated by the USA as a terrorist fundraising entity, on account of its alleged links to Hamas-linked Palestinian charities (including zakat committees). Eventually, after two court hearings, the State Department decided in January 2010, in a document signed by Secretary Clinton, to lift the ban against Ramadan’s entering the USA. This Chapter recounts the progress of the case, and reproduces a letter sent by Benthall to Secretary Clinton in October 2009 in support of the ACLU’s representation of Ramadan.Less

The book begins by raising the question of how political progressives may find or construct a language for contemporary political circumstances. The chapter draws an analogy between the religious wars of the eighteenth and twenty-first century and draws upon Michel Foucault's late writings to argue that an ethos, rather than any particular doctrine, connects us to the Enlightenment. The chapter then lays out a plan to constructa Socratic dialogue about the future of the Enlightenment with the Kant scholar Allen W. Wood, the political liberal John Rawls, the French poststructuralist Gilles Deleuze, and the Muslim political reformer Tariq Ramadan.Less

This chapter analyses the notions the Brotherhood has of politics and starts out with the question: what does the MB understand as politics? The author argues that after al-Hudaybi the MB has increasingly accepted politics as a separate field. Its ambiguity stems from the difficulty of oscillating between belief (iman) and politics. This makes full acceptance of politics and free deliberation. The chapter ends with an analysis of Tariq Ramadan’s ideas and a comparison between his ideas and those of the MB.Less

How may progressive political theorists advance the Enlightenment after Darwin shifted the conversation about human nature in the 19th century, the Holocaust displayed barbarity at the historical center of the Enlightenment, and 9/11 showed the need to modify the ideals and strategies of the Enlightenment? Kantian Courage considers how several figures in contemporary political theory—including John Rawls, Gilles Deleuze, and Tariq Ramadan—do just this as they continue Immanuel Kant's legacy. Rather than advocate specific Kantian ideas, the book contends that political progressives should embody Kantian courage—a critical and creative disposition to invent new political theories to address the problems of the age. It illuminates Kant's legacy in contemporary intellectual debates; constructs a dialogue among Anglo-American, Continental, and Islamic political theorists; and shows how progressives may forge alliances across political and religious differences by inventing concepts such as the overlapping consensus, the rhizome, and the spaceof testimony. The book will interest students of the Enlightenment, contemporary political theorists and philosophers, and a general audience concerned about the future of the relationship between Islam and the West.Less

Chapter four describes and analyses two parallel developments that form crucial backgrounds to the work of Awakening. First, it details the growth of a theology inclusive of popular culture among intellectual, conservative Muslims, and explicates on the concept al-fann al-hadif (purposeful art). The discussion of thinkers such as Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Abdullah Al Judai and Tariq Ramadan are stressed. This conversation is developed simultaneously as the rise of a new form of nashid originating among political Islamic activists in the Arab world in the 1970s that soon spread to similar circles worldwide. The style metamorphoses into pop music and becomes a global trend from the mid 1990s and onwards pioneered by British Yusuf Islam, Malaysian Raihan, South African Zain Bhikha and Canadian Dawud Wharnsby. Their respective music careers and productions are introduced and the connections with Awakening are emphasized. The chapter ends with the mentioning of other musicians and music styles that have influenced Awakening artists.Less

This chapter explores the western reaction to Amina Lawal’s case. It outlines how famous western leaders, from Nicolas Sarkozy to Bill Clinton to Oprah Winfrey treated this case, and critically examines western non-governmental organizations’ responses. The chapter also examines how difficult it can be to discuss how Nigerian women feel about shar’iah, if their views are negative, in western scholarly discourses that are understandably concerned about the damage done by “imperial feminism.” This chapter tries to unearth Nigerian women’s voices in as authentic a way as possible, and provides two visions of gender rights in Northern Nigeria: that of Northern Nigerian historian Ibraheem Sulaiman and Northern Nigerian journalist, the late Balkisu Yusuf. The chapter ends with a short conclusion.Less
