Even after more than a century of intense study, understanding of the cults and beliefs of Rome’s armies remains partial. This chapter is the first of three to examine these cults and beliefs in the context of the auxilia. Excavations continue to yield data that confounds earlier analyses, introducing new layers of confusion and ambiguity to a field that has long prided itself on order and categorization. While the well attested centralizing practices, such as the veneration of the standards, played an important role in auxiliary bases, it is possible to see tremendous, often overlooked, variety in the rituals that took place within their walls. Archaeological evidence shows that sacred space was defined in many ways at these sites. The chapter also examines the related theme of sacred time at military installations and reappraises the content and cultural context of the feriale Duranum.Less
