This chapter talks about the life of Nancy Work, who left Taiwan and her mother because her father wanted her to have good education and to succeed in the United States. When her father died, Nancy was adopted by a Caucasian family. She recounts her miserable life with her adoptive parents and the racism she experienced in the university town where she grew up. At seventeen, Nancy was able to leave her adoptive parents. She tells of her efforts to finish college and to find a secure job. Nancy then decided to go back to Taiwan to be reunited with her mother. She studied Chinese in Beijing for she had forgotten how to speak it. Nancy details how she then contacted her father's relatives, and tells how different their culture and attitudes are from her. She succeeded in finding her mother but had problems with having different expectations and ideas.Less
