The chapter deals with the role of military music in colonised countries in the nineteenth century, especially Australia, New Zealand, Asia and South Africa. It deals with the role of military music in the social lives of the emerging colonies and in imperial ceremony. The chapter also deals with the role of musicians in times of conflict in the nineteenth century. A further topic in the chapter is the cultural transplantation and acculturation that occurred in the wake of colonisation, as local ethnic communities drew from the influence of the music of the colonising forces to create new and distinctive idioms.Less
