The color line was effectively breached the day Jackie Robinson stepped to the plate at Jersey City's Roosevelt Stadium in the first inning of the Little Giants versus Montreal Royals game in April of 1946. It was a fortuitous game as the Royals won 14–1. Robinson's fiery temperament was effectively on hold and he was advised by Rickey to fight back only with his bat, glove, and flying feet and this he did splendidly, topping almost every hitting average, runs scored, and bases stolen. He was joined as a pioneer by John Wright however; Wright could not stand the pressure and thus succumbed to it. As expected, the move was widely met with disapproval by the major league clubs and some even threatened to ban playing with the Royals.Less

This chapter describes the events that transpired and the people that made it possible to breach the color line. Two persons, half a continent apart, are credited for making such a breach—Jack Roosevelt Robinson and Wesley Branch Rickey. In the guise of forming the Brooklyn Brown Dodgers, Rickey scouted for a black baseball player who would breach the color bar and he found Jackie Robinson of the Kansas City Monarchs. This chapter describes Robinson's early beginnings in baseball. When he arrived in Brooklyn, Robinson was surprised to find out he was to play for the Montreal Royals. The announcement of his signing with the Montreals was easily the top sports story of the year. As expected, the news was greeted by misgivings and disbelief.Less
