This book provides a series of case studies concerning ports and port communities from around the world, in attempt to determine the impact of globalisation on the port industry and the link between local and global port conditions. It also presents the case for the absolute necessity of ports and port systems to trade and industry on a global scale. The book is comprised of ten essays, the first six of which concern local issues in a rapid globalising industry. The second section contains the remaining four essays, which consider port systems from national perspectives.Less

This chapter analyses the impact of containerisation on the port systems of the world, in particular the increase in competition and rivalry due to the presence of markets and growing necessity of profitability. The following subdivisions are explored in detail, and punctuated with partinent graphs and statistics:- Global Port Rankings; Container Ports and Terminals; Port Industrialisation; Port Authorities and Terminal Operators; and Container Networks and Regional Port Systems. It concludes by suggesting port rivalry will continue on a regional scale.Less

This volume concerns the history of the Australian port of Fremantle, located on the edge of Western Australia and the Indian Ocean, throughout the hundred years of frequent changes to its structure and function between 1897 and 1997. Tull’s aim is to use Fremantle as a prime example of the complex network of a Port, as a community and a place of vast and varied maritime business endeavours. He seeks to erase the perception of ports as ‘passive links in the international transport chain’ in order to draw ports to the attention and further research of maritime historians. The chapters are arranged thematically rather than chronologically, and includes statistical appendices, a bibliography, and an index, for ease of navigation.Less

This study provides a history of the Port of Liverpool between 1905 and 1938, during its decline. It is particularly interested in the history of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, Liverpool’s enormous and sole port authority. Adrian Jarvis contrasts the decision-making process of the Board with the financial history of the docks, in attempt to evaluate the Board successes and failures. The study accounts for and explores the factors which contributed to the decline of Liverpool’s shipping industry, with topics ranging from the growth of railways, the advances in shipping technology, the success of commercial liners, to the Great Depression and Great War. The study is complemented with an appendix exploring the efficiency of ports; a bibliography; a note on the sources; an index; and a conclusion that asserts the overall merit of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board when considering the tremendous and often unpredictable challenges the Board faced, such as wartime disruption.Less

This chapter explores the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board during the early-twentieth century, as it attempted to adapt to the changing economic landscape. Jarvis analyses the effectiveness of the Board’s strategies in regard to the following: willingness to change; resistance to cutting advertising; and aggressiveness toward the competitor trades of Manchester, Hull, and London. It concludes by claiming the Board’s core belief - that expansion and upgrades would keep ships interested - was challenged by war. Less

This chapter examines in depth the Port of Liverpool, and the nature of its trade as of 1905. It begins by considering the physical condition of the port, detailing the expansions and renovations that enabled the accommodation of steamships. It contrasts the financial successes of Kings and Queens docks with the rest of the port, which fared less successfully. Further time is devoted to exploring the actions of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board during the time of port expansion. Overall, despite several successes and a wide variety of trades, the Port of Liverpool in 1905 was suffering from the financial cost of expansion, poor cotton, woodwork, and clothing trade, and increasing competition from Southampton and the Manchester Ship Canal.Less
