This essay discusses the development of the Port of Liverpool and the politics of port management that ensconced it during the mid-Victorian era. It is divided into the following topics concerning the port authority of Liverpool: growth and diversification; interests and influence; port authorities in relation to warehouse docks; political friction between the the Port of Birkenhead and Port of Liverpool; and the rise of steamship owners and the resulting impact on the port. It concludes by asserting that the advent of the steamship technology brought both a great deal of wealth and a great deal of instability to the port, and that maritime merchants; the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board; the council; Birkenhead landowners; and port labourers, were locked in a political battle over the optimal use of the port’s resources.Less

This study provides a history of the Port of Liverpool between 1905 and 1938, during its decline. It is particularly interested in the history of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, Liverpool’s enormous and sole port authority. Adrian Jarvis contrasts the decision-making process of the Board with the financial history of the docks, in attempt to evaluate the Board successes and failures. The study accounts for and explores the factors which contributed to the decline of Liverpool’s shipping industry, with topics ranging from the growth of railways, the advances in shipping technology, the success of commercial liners, to the Great Depression and Great War. The study is complemented with an appendix exploring the efficiency of ports; a bibliography; a note on the sources; an index; and a conclusion that asserts the overall merit of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board when considering the tremendous and often unpredictable challenges the Board faced, such as wartime disruption.Less

This chapter provides details about the establishment of the Fremantle Harbour Trust - following the model established by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board of 1857 - and explores the Fremantle Harbour Trust Act of 1903. Tull establishes that a great deal of political interference remained prevalent throughout the port’s history, and also notes that the FHT were permitted to engage in cargo-handling, a unique benefit not permitted to other Australian ports. The impact of these circumstances is discussed in later chapters.Less

This essay examines the discipline of port history - primarily British - to discuss what has been achieved and what further studies might contribute. It places the work of Gordon Jackson into context, and deems his works integral to the field. Port philosophy, progress, future achievements, financial crises, and a case study of the development of the Port of Liverpool, are scrutinised by the author, Adrian Jarvis, in order to conclude that the study of port history, whilst a thoroughly researched discipline in its own right, ought now to focus on integrating with maritime history and wider contexts in order to move forward.Less

This final chapter examines the role of cotton brokers in the port of Liverpool in the late-Nineteenth century. It uses data compiled by the Mercantile Liverpool Project, census material from trade directories, and social documents such as biographies and obituaries to reconstruct the activities of the Liverpool cotton broker community between 1850 and 1901. It explores the attitudes toward the value of cotton trading as a vocation in Liverpool and provides a case study of cotton broker Samuel Smith, and Robert Rankin of ‘Rankin, Gilmour and Co’. It offers an analysis of cotton broking statistics; British in-migration to the port of Liverpool in pursuit of employment; and the overall business success of cotton broking in Liverpool, to determine that cotton broking was an unstable venture that lacked social prestige, and that successful cotton brokers often had safety nets in other trade ventures out of necessity.Less

This essay focuses on business networks in the North of England in the nineteenth century, with particular attention paid to shipowning interests. Graeme J. Milne looks at both regional and national economies to understand the role of the shipowner, and explores the web of interconnect relationships between shipowners, merchants, and other economic figures. He determines the impact of shipowning business culture on wider commercial decision-making. He concludes by affirming that shipping in a historical context can be better understood by studying interconnections in related fields, rather than as an isolated industry.Less
