This chapter introduces the arguments of Boyarin, Lieu, and van Henten concerning martyrdom and identity construction among Jews and Christians, arguing that the death of Stephen should be considered through this theoretical lens. As supporting argument for considering Stephen alongside second-century martyrologies, it situates Acts as an early second-century text. Appropriating Castelli’s arguments concerning martyrdom in Christian cultural memory, it argues that scholarly assertions concerning the historicity of Stephen’s death are more indebted to the force of cultural memory than to the historical-critical method. While concurring with Penner that verisimilitude, not “historical accuracy,” is the coin of ancient historiography, it then moves to suggest that this is not a reason to abandon the historiographic project but rather to frame historical narrative differently, in terms of rhetoric and ethic, as has been long argued in biblical studies by Schüssler Fiorenza.Less

This chapter concludes the study on La Guiannée of Ste. Genevieve and Prairie du Rocher by bringing together the idea individuals, people, or culture hold onto objects, songs, signs, and other symbols because of the memory they evoke. Memories attached to the Guiannée come from the participants’ imagination because the celebration adapts and changes at each place they perform. Festivals like the Rendezvous and the Jour de Fête create a medium to communicate culture to outsiders, maintaining an historical and cultural continuity. The Guiannée resonates between the known histories of the communities and the values passed on from the historical ancestors, a lieu de mémoire which links the two worlds. Heritage tourism and the availability of information provide valuable cultural exchanges, enabling individuals to share a common bond through the Guiannée.Less

This chapter explores press intervention upon the proliferation of scandals under the French colonial administration, thus spurring Vietnamese public mobilization. At the period of economic growth, and with an expanding newspaper audience, the controversial Maurice Cognacq replaced Albert Sarraut as governor of the colony. Cognacq had been involved in the practice of nepotism, questionable deals, and harassment of public opponents—all of which were exposed by the Vietnamese press. Among these controversies, the most devastating was the “Saigon port monopoly affair” that clearly showed the disparate interests of the Vietnamese natives and the French colonial regime. The Saigon port monopoly affair marks the beginning of some journalistic breakthroughs with the likes of The Broken Bell (La Cloche Fêlée) under the editorship of Nguyễn An Ninh, and Trần Huy Liệu's leadership of the Indochina Times (Đông Pháp Thời Báo).Less

The title ‘Moving Memories’ refers to the affective, changing and spatially mobile characteristics of Spanish republicans’ memory activities. The chapter reflects on the place of refugees’ memories within and beyond the memory framework of the French nation state. It demonstrates both the possibilities and limits of Nora's work for understanding refugees’ memories through a discussion of the relationship between lieux and milieux de mémoire. The emphasis then turns to Spanish republican remembrance practices in both public and private spaces in France. The chapter explains how and why a commemorative culture of the Spanish republican exile slowly started to appear during the 1970s. It then charts the development of memory associations in France from the 1980s to the seventieth anniversary of the Retirada in 2009. The last section of the chapter reveals how Spanish republicans have constructed a sense of home through material culture and everyday rituals. Their narratives evoke the long-lasting effects of exile, but also underline how any understanding of exile necessarily involves a consideration of the attitudes and reactions of the host country.Less
