This book examines the attraction of American Jews to Christian Science during the early 1900s, and the emergence of Jewish Science as a counter movement. It discusses the works of the major proponents of Jewish Science: Morris Lichtenstein, Tehilla Lichtenstein, Alfred Geiger Moses, and Clifton Harby Levy. It argues that the greatest legacy of Jewish Science may well be its emphasis on the importance of spiritual healing.Less

This chapter presents an introduction written by Ward Edwards to the paper by Paul Slovic and Sarah Lichtenstein published in an issue of Organizational Behavior and Human Performance. It gives credit to and takes potshots at streams of research that, while not antithetical to the Bayesian approach, failed to address its virtues. Ward praises Egon Brunswik for realizing that the task was an essential component of any theory of behavior, while pointing out that Brunswik's way of handling the probabilistic nature of the environment was somewhat primitive. Anderson's functional measurement approach was credited with bringing measurement theory into psychology, but criticized for lacking a theory of response selection. He laughed at the behaviorists, finding trivial examples that showed how rewarded responses did not increase in likelihood of occurrence when reasoned actions are under consideration.Less

This chapter focuses on the 1920s, before the Second World War, when only Lichtenstein and Spain had decided to establish constitutional courts. During that period, a particularly powerful voice, that of Hans Kelsen, could be heard in support of the new system. This important legal philosopher was very influential in the construction of the Austrian Constitutional Court—where he served as a judge from 1921 to 1930. There is no doubt that Kelsen deserves enormous credit for the introduction and theoretical defense of constitutional courts. It is very useful to examine Kelsen's ideas in order to understand the intellectual sources of the European model—which is often referred to as “Kelsenian.” Kelsen wrote extensively in favor of subjecting legislation to some type of judicial review and in favor of the centralized model, as opposed to the American alternative.Less

According to the historian Pierre Couperie, comics had been influenced by the evolution of other art forms. Jean-Christophe Menu, for his part, sees comics as having its own avant-garde movement that is embodied by works produced in the decades since 1990. This chapter examines the relationship between comics and contemporary art and argues that they differ in their essence. It explores how comics became a major source of inspiration for certain artistic movements such as Pop Art in the United States and New Figuration in France. In particular, it looks at the debate on whether Roy Lichtenstein magnified comics panels and reinvigorated comic art. It also discusses comics’ adoption of the language of contemporary art, focusing on the work of comics artist and painter Jerry Moriarty. Finally, it considers how exhibitions, particularly in France, have brought comics and fine arts together.Less

This chapter examines how the most recent wave of globalization has been inscribed in innovative travel writing about major metropolitan cities. It analyzes Rachel Lichtenstein and Iain Sinclair's Rodinsky's Room and Sam Miller's Delhi: Adventures in a Megacity and explains that both travel texts attempt to textualize the multivalent perspectives of megacities. This chapter contends that innovative travel texts about the global cities of London and Delhi can offer unique perspectives on the complexities of place in a hypermobile and rapidly changing world.Less
