This chapter examines how Intuit Inc. has become a successful learning organization by creating a company-wide innovation culture and making experimentation the key process component of its decision making. In particular, it considers the processes that Intuit has embraced as part of a mission to learn better and faster throughout its 8,000-person organization. Founded by Scott Cook and Tom Proulx in 1983, Intuit has more than $4.2 billion of revenue and over 8,000 employees. It develops and sells financial, tax, and accounting software solutions to consumers, small businesses, accountants, and financial institutions. Its products include Quicken, QuickBooks, and TurboTax. A consistent market leader and a high-performance company, Intuit has been voted one of the best companies to work for in the United States. A few key executives became integral to Intuit's transformation, including CEO Brad Smith and Vice President of Design Kaaren Hanson. Hanson and her team were ultimately responsible for creating Intuit's transformative tools, Design for Delight, and its important component of rapid experimentation.Less

This book provides an actionable blueprint that makes use of science to build a leading-edge learning organization. More specifically, it explains how one can become a better and faster learner and how to create an organization that is more adaptable and learns better and faster than the competition. It thus examines the process of learning from an individual and an organizational standpoint. From an individual perspective, it considers the cognitive, emotional, motivational, attitudinal, and behavioral factors that promote better learning. Organizationally, it looks at the kinds of structures, culture, leadership, employee learning behaviors, and human resource policies that are necessary to create an environment that fosters critical and innovative thinking, learning conversations, and collaboration. The book takes an indepth look at three exemplary learning organizations and the lessons they offer: Bridgewater Associates LP, Intuit Inc., and United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS).Less
