If Darwin (1862, 1877) had been able to use the modern protocols and equipment used to determine how orchid visiting insects detected color patterns, it is likely he would have described the extent of floral mimicry in these flowers over his lifetime (See Chapters 2-5, 7, 10). The author reviews the function of color in orchid flowers and how they may enhance their own detectability. The vision of flower visiting Diptera, (flies) and Hymenoptera (bees and wasps) is compared, as is modelling color and modelling fly vision.Less
