This chapter examines the complicated political history of the merchant trade community of Odessa, which includes the Russian expansion into the Black Sea; the Greek settlement in Odessa; the role of Bulgarian merchants in Odessa; the establishment of Novorossiya; and the rise of Greek nationalism in the area. It examines the methodological difficulties in studying this period due to a lack of population and business statistics. It concludes that the port of Odessa became Greek-dominated over time, and maritime mercantile activity in Odessa became a factor that symbolised Greek Nationalism and ‘Greekness’.Less

This chapter examines the urban networks and hierarchies in place in Greek port communities in the Nineteenth century. It is particularly concerned with the ports of Corfu (under British rule), Patras, Syros, and Piraeus. It seeks to further understand how networks of power developed in these ports, by exploring the mercantile communities that resulted from in-migration; the synergy between merchants and state authorities and the hierarchies; the networks that developed from wealth, commercial activity, access to resources, access to information, and the ability to raise capital; and, finally, the role of merchant philanthropy within the community. It concludes that merchants benefited from a convergence of socio-economic interests as a result of short and medium term alliances and the backing of advances to urban progress, and secured their own distinct class within the Greek economic hierarchy.Less

This chapter is a guide to the maritime historiography of Greece from the 1970s onwards. It explores the beginnings of Greek maritime history, pinpointed by the publication of volume Greek merchant history, and moves through shipping, naval history, corsairing, piracy, and studies of the port cities of continental Greece. The major concern of Greek maritime historiography is the lack of shipping statistics and data, a gap which the establishment of the Pontoporeia historical register is currently attempting to fill.Less
