Robert Van Gulick explains how integration and unity play an important role in a number of current theories and models of consciousness. Normal consciousness is unified in a variety of ways but many disorders of disunity can also occur. What can we learn from them about consciousness and unity? What theories of consciousness might help us better understand the nature and basis of such disorders? Van Gulick first surveys the diverse types of conscious unity. He then briefly describes five theories of consciousness that involve integration, that is, Baars’s Global Workspace Theory (GWT), Tononi's Integrated Information Theory (IIT), Jesse Prinz's AIR theory (Attended Intermediate Representation), Tim Bayne's Phenomenal Unity thesis, and the combination of his own HOGS (Higher-order Global States) model with Virtual Self Realism (VSR). In that context, he discusses three specific pathologies of disunity -- neglect and extinction, dissociative identity disorder, and split-brains–and each is considered in relation to the integration based theories of consciousness.Less

This book is framed around two very simple and interrelated questions; what is global power and in what ways does China have it? By focussing on political economy and ideational dimensions of global power, it shows how Xi Jinping, whilst building on what came before, has developed a set of strategic strands designed to bring about (global) change. This does not mean that all Chinese international interactions are a direct result of a clearly coordinated and controlled state project; grand strategy and state interest and intent can be (and indeed, often is) assumed when in reality Chinese overseas actors are utilising their ‘bounded autonomy’ to attain other objectives. The changing nature of China’s global economic role – not least the growth of outward investment – might have been enough it itself to shine a new light on the nature of China’s rise. So too might the way that China’s leaders have articulated their global governance reform agenda and used an ‘occidentalism’ to establish China’s leadership credentials. Or the nature of attempts to influence (or even control) the way that China’s rise is discussed and debated across the world. It’s perhaps not surprising, then, that while a risen China might have gained followership from some, concern about the consequences of China’s rise has increased quite significantly in places where it was previously viewed with less apprehension.Less

This introductory chapter presents an outline of the relationship of Enlightenment to religion in the post-9/11 world order, also known as the New Global Order. The prominence of radical Islam and other religious terrorist movements on the world stage forces one to ask if such examples are not isolated events, but rather part of a broader phenomenon, an eruption of intense religiosity in tension and opposition to modern sensibilities. It can be suggested that Enlightenment is needed as it marks the most dramatic step toward secularization and rationalism. The chapter briefly elaborates on three questions which will be discussed entirely on the text: To what extent is the Enlightenment able to extend its influence beyond the West? To what extent should we wish it to do so? Does the post-9/11 world force us to confront some essential limitations of Enlightenment principles, which as such affect their validity not only outside the West but within it?Less

The introductory chapter stars by outlining the ‘Three Intents’ or the main objectives for the book as a whole. It then establishes the ‘Four Constraints’, or the major factors that shaped its focus and the nature of the underpinning scholarship. It finishes by explaining the ‘Eight Arguments’ that underpin the analysis, and which are explored in more detail throughout the following chapters.Less
