Arab New York is an ethnographic exploration of how everyday life and politics intersect in the diverse and complex Arab communities of New York City. The book argues that politics and contention move into everyday social spaces in order to circumvent many of the most challenging barriers to Arab American political participation. To show this, it studies Arab communities in practice, places where Arab Americans identify together as Arab and engage in collective work: in particular, community organizations providing services to newly immigrated Arabs and social movement organizations advocating on behalf of freedom and justice in their countries of origin. The book covers issues of forming community in diaspora, young women’s political engagement, differences between different approaches to pro-Palestine activism, and the challenges and possibilities of organizing on behalf of the Arab spring revolutions. Through detailed portraits of community organizations and activist groups, Arab New York helps explain why politics is everywhere for Arab Americans, and how their experiences of contestation, exclusion and acceptance shape their lives.Less

This section moves away from the thread of discussion on representations of trauma and instead turn to an issue that is gaining momentum within the comics field–the representation of female characters and the matter of sexism in the industry: Where are there female creators? Most of the primary texts in this book concentrate on male characters, and when female characters do appear they are usually presented not as agents, but as reagents to the male characters or as victims of sexual violence. The excursus presents the issue of female combatants and gender politics in American comics, and offers a brief explanation and a small sampling of how women are presented in war and trauma comics.Less

This chapter examines the challenges facing women who want to participate in politics in Northern Ireland and touches upon the relationship between women inside and outside politics. Women constantly run up against socially conservative attitudes and face residual and overt misogyny and resistance to specific measures for change, including at times from women who have internalised as the norm practices that protect the dominant male group. The chapter draws upon survey research to show changes in public attitudes and discusses outreach programmes that support women who wish to become involved. It traces the post-Good Friday Agreement (GFA) journey for women through the political institutions and demonstrates that while some progress has been made, more is required.Less
