This conclusion explores the sense that, whatever perspective we adopt towards the English language’s present scope, its preeminence and dominance can appear unchallengeable. It continues to argue that both preeminence and dominance are unlikely to be long-lived, and that each is a relatively recent phenomenon. Through reading a text by the controversial Polish journalist Ryszard Kapuściński, the conclusion recalls just how different linguistic history could have been, and considers different possibilities for its future. It also argues that postcolonial studies, through engaging with World Englishes and their study in linguistics, can renew itself in order to engage with different aspects of the linguistic, cultural, political, and economic futures that are currently in the process of being shaped.Less
