This chapter focuses on James Petigru Boyce and his efforts to establish a Southern Baptist seminary. In 1856, Boyce emerged as the leader of a new effort to establish a Southern Baptist seminary. By the time of his election as professor of theology at Furman University in 1855, he had concluded that it was his duty under God to do all in his power to establish the seminary. Without his leadership and sacrificial devotion, the seminary would have failed to be established or, once established, would have suffered extinction. His energy, wisdom, and determination overcame the many obstacles and crises that threatened the seminary's existence.Less

This chapter discusses the time after Press Maravich departed for NC State, at which time he was replaced by his assistant, Bobby Roberts. Roberts had played basketball and baseball at Furman University. He compiled a record of 89-20 as a high school coach in South Carolina and joined the staff at Clemson in 1958. His freshman teams won 49 games against 20 losses over four seasons. After taking over as head coach, he built on the foundations that Maravich had established to elevate Clemson beyond mere respectability. Under his guidance, the Tigers achieved their first-ever winning records in the ACC. Roberts had a friendly, easygoing personality, but his coaching style was tough and demanding. He succeeded because he taught his teams to play with discipline and inspired them to play with enthusiasm.Less
