This chapter focuses on the midlife transformation of then fifty-two-year-old George Sand, signified by the significant change in her handwriting. In George Sand Under the Magnifying Glass, Frederic Dubois interprets this phenomenon as a sign of personal growth and development. There were other changes that accompanied age and maturity. From the petite young woman who passed as a male university student in the Paris of the 1830s, Sand had attained a full, matronly figure in her midlife that she clothed in simple, comfortable dresses rather than the trousers, cutaway jacket, and high hat of her youthful, more rebellious years. From 1849 on, Sand spent most of her life at Nohant, eschewing Paris for a more tranquil country life.Less
