This chapter tries to show that Origen also has a stake in the way biblical narrative expresses Christ's identity. It reveals that Origen is especially concerned to figure out Christ's identity in relation to believers, in order to demonstrate how the believer is personally transformed by that relation. The discussion then shifts to Frei's concern for the relation of identity to narrative. It shows that unlike Origen, Frei is more focused on showing how Jesus' identity is a result of his unique relation to God, which is a relation that human beings cannot share or usurp. The differences between these two theologians can be seen in their remarks on Paul's use of the veil metaphor in his interpretation of Exodus 34.Less
