This book considers the question of how the direct involvement of social scientists in the practices they study can lead to the production of interesting sociological knowledge. It draws together two activities that are often seen as belonging to different realms: intervening in practices and furthering sociological understanding of them. The common separation of these domains partly stems from disciplinary self-understandings within sociology as either ‘detached’ or ‘engaged’. Situated Intervention proposes that this debate is unproductive for discussing the role of social sciences in relation to their fields. Philosophers of science such as Ian Hacking have argued that natural sciences benefited tremendously from broadening their scholarly mode from theorizing about the world to intervening through experiments Adhering to an objectivist and theorizing image of scholarship within sociology thereby risks loosing a mode of knowledge production that has proven highly productive in the natural sciences. Furthermore, experimental interventions prove relevant for discussions about the normativity of sociological research. These matters are explored by analyzing organizational change projects in healthcare: the development of a hemophilia care center, pathways for hematology and oncology at an outpatient clinic, redesigning oncology care and elective surgery in sixteen hospitals, and evaluating a quality improvement collaborative in long-term care. These experiments invariably lead to the surprising production of sociological knowledge as well as producing novel normativities. The analysis thereby shows that, through situated intervention, sociology not only has more to offer to the practices it studies, but also has more to learn from it.Less

The rendezvous which changed the course of the Great Rebellion was held on Kentford Heath, on June 4 and 5. Six horse regiments attended it. It was two short of the former eight since Whalley's and Cromwell's had been sent off to escort the king. The main business of the first day was to get their approval of a ‘Humble Representation of the Dissatisfaction of the Army’, which was then presented to Fairfax. The ‘Solemn Engagement of the Army’, which was read to every regiment on June 5 was essentially a military covenant, where the whole army entered into a mutual pledge not to allow itself to be disbanded until it received satisfaction on certain stated matters. The Army also put forth on June 14 a ‘Declaration’ of its larger political aims.Less

This chapter documents the series of events in November when the army's debates entered a more forceful phase towards the end. The frequent sessions of the General Council were interspersed with meetings of its committee in a final effort to establish a set of terms for the kingdom's settlement on which the army could agree. The most interesting points in the committee's draft on November 2 dealt with the rights which the sovereign people preserved even from their elected representatives. On November 5 and 6, the General Council met again to approve a definitive statement of the peace terms that the army could agree to. Before it adjourned until November 25, the General Council appointed another committee to make a summary of what the army stood committed to in Solemn Engagement and its subsequent declarations with regard to the good of the kingdom and the liberties of the people.Less

This chapter presents our dependent variables. It discusses the ways in which the various dimensions of European citizenship and of engagement have been theorised and measured. Citizenship is mapped onto the three theoretical dimensions of citizenship (identity, representation and scope of government), thus showing that citizens’ attitudes are clearly structured along these dimensions. The descriptive picture of European citizenship that emerges is one of a nuanced balance, in which medium levels of European identification are associated with mixed evaluations of the policy responsiveness of EU institutions and of EU policy competence. The final part of the chapter discusses our two measures of European engagement: overall support for the EU itself and people’s preparedness to participate in elections to the European Parliament.Less

In summary, this book proposes that improper sites of subtitling and dubbing provide a key to revaluing translation’s role within screen culture broadly. By analysing a range of emergent practices, Speaking in Subtitles has explored ‘errancy’ as a fault line rapidly spreading across the surface of contemporary screen translation, transferring attention away from endless, unresolvable debates on ‘quality’ towards the geopolitics that determine and delimit value systems in the first place. The concrete translation practices explored in this book identify language diversity as a major trajectory within digital and online modes of media engagement. Paying attention to improper sites of subtitling and dubbing provides a crucial key, it argues, to revaluing translation’s role within screen culture broadly—these ‘error screens’ are central, not peripheral, to screen culture as the risks of linguistic and cultural mutation that attend interlingual translation keep films, TV programs and other forms of screen media circulating, evolving and living-on.Less

Obama introduced significant changes to US policy that brought ambitions more effectively into line with the means available to achieve them. He secured more effective multilateral cooperation from key states, which in turn enabled him to impose more effective coercion. Of equal importance, however, was his abandonment of the demand that Iran give up the fuel cycle. That decision was driven by his recognition that continued enrichment was non-negotiable as far as Tehran was concerned and his fear that the alternative to acknowledging that would be military conflict. There would have been no JCPOA, however, without parallel changes inside Iran. After eight years of dominance by Iranian hard liners, the 2013 election saw Hassan Rouhani returned to office. Obama's concession on enrichment created the political space for him to pursue a negotiated solution while Iran's economic problems and growing legitimacy crisis persuaded the Supreme Leader to support him in doing so. A nuclear agreement was finally reached as a result of smarter diplomacy on the part of the USA, the exhaustion of coercive options short of war, and domestic political changes on both sides, but especially in Iran.Less

Muslims are a subsidiary concern for religion reporting in Scotland’s news media. If journalists must cover religion, issues pertaining to Christian sectarianism still occupy a central focus, although, as more Scots identify with no religion, news reports take on a memorialising tone, marking religion’s decline. Sometimes these storylines merge, as was the case with the biggest religion story in the news during my research about Muslims and the news media in Scotland: the revelation of the sexual abuse of several priests by Cardinal Keith O’Brien (Deveney, 2013). The dominant Scottish story overall was the preparation for the referendum on independence. Muslims played a humble part in coverage of the second story and no part at all in the first.Less

More
Neuropsychological assessment has a long history in the United States military and has played an essential role in ensuring the mental health and operational readiness of service members since World War I (Kennedy, Boake, & Moore, 2010). Over the years, mental health clinicians in the military have developed paper-and-pencil assessment instruments, which have evolved in terms of psychometric rigor and clinical utility, but not in terms of technological sophistication. Since the advent of modern digital computing technology, considerable research has been devoted to the development of computer-automated neuropsychological assessment applications (Kane & Kay, 1992; Reeves, Winter, Bleiberg, & Kane, 2007), a trend that is likely to continue in the future. While many comparatively antiquated paper-and-pencil-based test instruments are still routinely used, it is arguably only a matter of time until they are supplanted by more technologically advanced alternatives. It is important to note, however, that questions have been raised about the ecological validity of many commonly used traditional neuropsychological tests, whether paper-and-pencil-based or computerized (Alderman, Burgess, Knight, & Henman, 2003; Burgess et al., 2006; Chaytor & Schmitter- Edgecombe, 2003; Chaytor, Schmitter-Edgecombe, & Burr, 2006; Parsons, 2016a; Sbordone, 2008). In the context of neuropsychological testing, ecological validity generally refers to the extent to which test performance corresponds to real-world performance in everyday life (Sbordone, 1996). In order to develop neuropsychological test instruments with greater ecological validity, investigators have increasingly turned to virtual reality (VR) technologies as a means to assess real-world performance via true-to-life simulated environments (Campbell et al., 2009; Negut, Matu, Sava, & Davis, 2016; Parsons, 2015a, 2015b, 2016a). Bilder (2011) described three historical and theoretical formulations of neuropsychology. First, clinical neuropsychologists focused on lesion localization and relied on interpretation without extensive normative data. Next, clinical neuropsychologists were affected by technological advances in neuroimaging and as a result focused on characterizing cognitive strengths and weaknesses rather than on differential diagnosis.

This chapter examines the depiction of military justice in motion pictures and television drama in the United States. The emergence of the court-martial drama roughly corresponds with the genesis of legal films. Court martial films tended to oscillate between the traditional generic courtroom dramas and war films, and in a way they may be described as a subgenre of the courtroom film. From 1931 to 1940, thirty-four American films focused on the topic of court-martial including Rules of Engagement, One Kill, and Hart's War.Less

Drawing from published reports of the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-being (NSCAW) the chapter presents the intensity and multidimensionality of needs in child welfare. The authors describe how these needs are underserved and the lack of an integrative treatment framework. The authors discuss the role of child welfare in screening and prioritizing needs, in service engagement and in tracking outcomes. The authors present an Integrative Needs-Based Model which is important for the scale-up of evidence-based practices in child welfare. The authors argue that such a practical model can successfully and systematically organize the cases for intervention planning and evaluation while retaining the complexities of the underlying conditions. To that end the authors propose utilizing more sophisticated multivariate procedures that can identify the most commonly co-occurring conditions.Less

This chapter uses the 2008 Bhutan program to examine visitor experience and the role of curators in crafting these experiences. Using the suggestive possibilities of a portable Buddhist shrine featured in the program and basing the analysis on 20 years of experience working with the Festival and its evaluation, the author lays out a framework for analyzing four levels of Festival visitor engagement: Level 1—Sensory Cultural Enlightenment/Being Present; Level 2—Choosing a Route/Moving Through; Level 3—Viewing and Taking part in the Live Performance/Active Experiencing; and Level 4—Revealing the Deeper Layers/Discovering More. The chapter concludes with observations about visitor studies relevant to museums as well as festivals.Less

Healthcare is a knowledge-based system. It draws on several different types of knowledge - scientific knowledge about biological processes, epidemiological knowledge about patterns of disease and risk factors, and clinical knowledge about how to treat medical problems. This book is concerned with a fourth type of knowledge that is equally important, but sometimes overlooked, namely how people experience health, illness, treatment and the delivery of care. In putting the book together our aim was to introduce readers to the various ways in which people’s experience of health and healthcare can be recorded, analysed and, where necessary, improvedLess

I talked in my essay at the beginning of this volume about my own efforts at self-improvement, a form of human enhancement which is not often discussed in the vast current literature on enhancement. In this essay I to turn to the efforts of others to effect my improvement either by friendly criticism or commentary or by sending in my direction thoughts from which I have undoubtedly benefitted and which I hope will interest and engage all readers of this book. All the chapters in this book deserve very detailed study and discussion and all are more than just commentaries or discussion pieces. I also note that each chapter is a self-contained and elegant contribution to the literature which would be worth reading in its own right quite independently of any engagement with my own approaches to the issues discussed. In this essay I say some, necessarily very brief, things, if not always in response, then at least about the very stimulating essays which comprise this book. It is part a response to my critics and part a further clarification of my philosophy.Less
