The newly married Thayer and Orr honeymooned in Santa Barbara, expecting to stay there for the duration of the war. Soon after their arrival, Thayer heard of the deaths of Farrar and Seeger. Though the pair was happy enough in the beginning, some traumatic event apparently occurred, and within less than a year the marriage began to unravel. The two returned suddenly to New York, where they not only took separate apartments but also evidently agreed to have an open marriage, each allowed intimacy with other partners. This is the beginning of Thayer's putting into practice his philosophy of free love.Less

By May 1916, Thayer had met and fallen in love with Elaine Orr. Before the two married, however, Thayer set himself a test of mettle: to go to a strange city without any money and support himself. He travelled to Chicago and took a job selling automobile directories while living in a modest rental room. He managed to make a living and returned home to marry Elaine, believing he had proven his ability to provide for a family despite his inheritance. The marriage took place in Orr's hometown of Troy, New York, where her family had prospered in paper manufacturing.Less
