This chapter reveals the discovery and different stages in the life cycle of Dictyostelium discoideum, the role of cAMP in intercellular communication, and the porphyrin photoreceptor in Escherichia coli. The significance of phototaxis and chemotaxis in the amoeba and the slug in controlling their movement is also discussed. The action spectrum of the amoeba and the slug indicates the use of different pigments to control phototaxis. Sorocarp, developed from the slug, has great adaptive value and eventually germinates and begins life anew as an amoeba.Less

This chapter takes a robust control approach to the robustness of oscillatory behavior, using oscillations in the social amoeba Dictyostelium as an illustrative example. It uses the proposed methods to examine the robustness of oscillations in the concentration of adenosine 3’, 5’-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) observed during the aggregation phase of starvation-induced development in Dictyostelium discoideum. It emphasizes the important roles played by stochastic noise in ensuring the robustness of biological oscillations. This chapter shows that the stochastic noise in the Dictyostelium cAMP network represents an important source of robustness to variations between different cells and to changes in their environment.Less
