During the 1950s and 1960s, researchers in Europe and the United States showed the difficulties inherent in the original ethological goal of studying animal behavior by first identifying an animal's instincts. This chapter reviews some of their major objections. Daniel Lehrman criticized the explanatory value of the concept of instinct and the impossibility of isolating innate behavior with deprivation experiments. Comparative psychologists Frank Beach, T. C. Schneirla, and Jay Rosenblatt stressed that isolation experiments cannot separate innate and learned behaviors. British animal researcher Robert Hinde exposed the weaknesses in Konrad Lorenz's hydraulic model of instinctual energy and the concept of drive.Less

In 1964, a remarkable neurobiology colloquium brought Leslie Orgel and Renato Dulbecco to our barracks; their backgrounds are summarized. Leo Szilard passed away in May, and his memorial was held in our unfinished courtyard. In 1965, a historic antibody workshop was organized, where molecular biologists joined immunologists. The Harvard neurobiology group of Steve Kuffler was interested in moving into our available laboratory space, but our financial situation was disastrous. Augustus Kinzel was brought in as president of the institute to organize fundraising. In 1967, a colloquium on development brought Daniel Lehrman and Eric Lenneberg, who introduced us to development of behavior and of language. However, the anti–Vietnam War and the counterculture movements created incidents that forced Kinzel’s resignation.Less
