The Harvard Forest Hemlock Removal Experiment, also known as Cut or Girdle, is a long-term experiment set up at Harvard Forest with the goal of understanding how forest ecosystems respond following the removal of a single foundation species. This chapter discusses the results of the Cut or Girdle experiment conducted in the New England landscape and compares it with regions across the United States. With Cut or Girdle, it is possible to determine how a representative New England forest changes, depending on how the hemlocks are killed and how quickly they disappear from the forest.Less

Chapter 2 investigates in some depth Bernard Stiegler’s notion of “tertiary memory” and its implications for the industrial production of temporal objects, such as films and music. Two case studies explore Stiegler’s assertion that cinema and life converge in the temporality of consciousness, whereby the remembrance of past events—involving a process of montage akin to post-production in creating movies—is rendered as a temporal object with the help of music. The first example is Omar Naïm’s The Final Cut (2004), a sci-fi drama and critique of commercial memory that revolves around a brain implant capable of recording every sensory impression in a person’s life. After a person’s death, the complete footage is reviewed by a cutter who eliminates unsavory episodes using music to suture uplifting moments into an uplifting “rememory” video of for friends and family. The second example from Federico Fellini’s semi-documentary Intervista (1987) in which Anita Ekberg and Marcello Marcello Mastroianni watch their younger selves in clips from La dolce vita (1960). Amid the continuous stream of interlocking music from both films, the actors reliving the past in the present amplifies their experience of a paradoxical “future anterior” (Roland Barthes) which both defies and defers to death.Less

How do the new filmmakers see sexuality, and how does this perspective differ from that of the state? What is the significance of depicting sexuality in contemporary Indonesian cinema? This chapter examines the so-called Richter Effect—attributed to Gerhard Richter—in relation to aesthetics. It begins by analyzing Richter's Baader-Meinhof painting series, entitled October 18, 1977 (1988), and his art book, War Cut (2004), and how both works provide compelling cases of contemporary moral-political, traumatic, historical art. In particular, it explores the pictorial and textual dimensions of Richter's resistance to the anti-aesthetic stance. It also argues that Richter's paintings reflect more than the mourning of their own medium by focusing on their effect on Astrid Proll, a former member of the Baader-Meinhof Group who claims that Richter's paintings allowed her for the first time to approach photographs of the Baader-Meinhof history and to come to terms with that history—the Richter Effect. Finally, it considers how the explanation of the Richter Effect can contribute to the regeneration of aesthetics.Less

This chapter addresses the question of how the social interactions necessary to food service in restaurants can be trained and managed. Interviews were conducted with managers from eight restaurants that compete with the Hungry Cowboy. These included chain restaurants and independent restaurants. Chain restaurants and independent restaurants had different patterns of training and hiring and management philosophies. Chain restaurants tend to use routinized scripts, themed packaging, and carefully defined training practices—an approach referred to as Total Quality Service, which attempts to predict all possible situations and lay out rules prescribing appropriate behavior. In contrast, independent restaurants tend to rely on specialized systems of management that grow out of the operation of individual companies—an approach defined as the Cut and Paste method, which arises in a much less organized or predictable manner, developing out of the idiosyncrasies of the particular workplace culture. The chapter compares Rosie’s with the Hungry Cowboy in order to scrutinize the attendant advantages and limitations of each management approach.Less

Although most researchers agree that many amphibian populations are declining, there is debate about how to distinguish human-induced declines from natural population fluctuations. As with many species, amphibian populations are regulated by a variety of intrinsic and extrinsic factors that can create cyclic population fluctuations. However, when compared to organisms such as insects and small mammals, there is a dearth of basic ecological information about the factors that underlie amphibian population cycles. This chapter argues that systematic, long-term research on amphibian populations is necessary to provide basic information about the amplitude and frequency of natural fluctuations. Such baseline information is essential for posing and testing alternative hypotheses to explain amphibian population declines. The chapter reviews twenty years of research on a population of Arizona tiger salamanders (Ambystoma tigrinum nebulosum) at the Mexican Cut Nature Preserve in south-central Colorado. It also discusses the ability of long-term demographic studies to provide the background information necessary to distinguish natural fluctuations from human-induced declines.Less

This chapter explores the works of British poet Roy Fisher in the 1960s and the 1970s. An elaborative fictiveness and a denotative realism have a constant interplay in Fisher's first sustained success, namely the poetry and prose sequence City. This work is made up of 16 prose passages and 10 poems ranging from a paragraph to a page. The delight of Fisher in the vision of the girl comprised of scraps stays faithful to the prolonging of perception. The subsequent works of Fisher involving prose are poet's prose or hybrid forms in general, and he seldom used a formalized genre like prose poetry or prose fiction. The Maysville Road continues north from Blue Licks through the Eden Shale Hills as a straightened and reconstructed modern highway. The old road is represented in many cut off loops that detach and reattach to the contemporary road. Along Red Bud Road, a cut off section of the old road, a remnant of the ancient Licking River flood plain lies more than 100 feet above the existing river channel. The ancestral Licking River deposited silt and gravel channel deposits here. As the river eroded its channel downward these deposits were left behind as extensive flats that are now farm land.Less

For women who have stopped cutting, the success of interventions against cutting in northern Ghana is also an index of a troubled economy and consequent bodily vulnerability and precarity. Chapter 5, Cutting in Times in Scarcity: Blood Loss and Slow Harm after NGOs, recasts the aftermath of governmental achievements in light of the perspectives of rural women in the Bongo district targeted by NGO and state interventions. Taking their concerns about lack of blood as a starting point, I explore how they problematize harm and make sense of the end of cutting. Cutting is now seen as unworthy of blood loss, and as a critical event that generates a lifelong susceptibility to illness. Cutting had to stop, they say, given how the struggles of the contemporary moment have meant that women can no longer afford to lose blood. Furthermore, while NGOs and the state seek to isolate cutting in a hermetically-sealed world of rural northern Ghanaians who resist change, these women link the end of cutting to national and pan-African concerns and idioms, joining a chorus of voices that criticize national blood shortages and emphasize the associated failures of biopolitical care.Less

Other creative apps like aQWERTYon, Cornelius Composer, and Blob Opera as well as other previously unmentioned creative apps like Google Doodles are introduced, explored, and discussed. Various mobile and cloud-based apps useful for looping, sampling, rapping, and recording are explored and compared for their possible applications in the music classroom.Less
