This chapter examines how creationists harnessed websites, magazines, museums, and institutes to rewrite history as well as the rules of science. By the end of the twentieth century, the Scopes trial was no longer a humiliation for creationists but an indignation. Realizing that the problem had been to make any compromise with literalism's naysayers, creationists recast and remythologized Scopes as a lesson, their defining moment in the fight against evolution. This chapter begins with an overview of the Creation Museum, located in Petersburg, Kentucky, and the ministry behind it, Answers in Genesis (AiG), along with AiG's proposed Ark Encounter museum. It then considers AiG's web sites as well as the Discovery Institute's creation of an online guide called Getting the Facts Straight: A Viewer's Guide to PBS's Evolution in response to the PBS seven-part series Evolution. It also discusses the movie Alleged, which addressed the conflict between science and creationism, and concludes with an assessment of the Creation Museum's depiction of Darwinism and interpretation of the Scopes trial.Less

In this chapter, the author describes his visit to the Creation Museum, a professional, commercially successful venture that opened in 2007 in Petersburg, Kentucky. Designed and built by the Answers in Genesis, the Creation Museum presents the young-Earth view of biblical exegesis and science. Its centerpiece is a labyrinth leading guests through Genesis 1–11. The museum is a thought-provoking enterprise that has much to teach us about modern creationism. While many of the exhibits relate to science generally and evolution specifically, the museum is primarily devoted to a particular view of the Bible. According to the Creation Museum, the most important events in world history can be summarized in “Seven Cs”: creation, corruption, catastrophe, confusion, Christ, cross, and consummation.Less

In this chapter, the author describes what he found during a visit to the Creation Museum, which opened in 2007 in Petersburg, Kentucky. The Creation Museum is a professional, commercially successful venture that presents the young-Earth view of biblical exegesis and science. The centerpiece of the museum is a labyrinth leading guests through Genesis 1–11. Designed and built by the Answers in Genesis, the museum features a “special effects theater,” where the author watched the movie Men in White. The museum is a thought-provoking enterprise that has much to teach us about modern creationism. In Men in White, the yearbook opens to a photograph of a science teacher dressed in a white lab coat who says the most important concept in modern biology is evolution.Less

During the twentieth century and into the twenty-first century, radical creationists have built a network of institutions to spread the word about their anti-evolution faith. Universities, schools, museums, and publishing companies all provide an environment in which Americans can raise children in a world safe from mainstream thinking. As this chapter argues, the alternate world of creationist institutions does not see the threat as being evolutionary theory itself but rather a changing society, one in which traditional values are no longer seen as sacrosanct. Children are not only taught creationist ideas but also a deep distrust of mainstream thinking.Less

Why do so many Americans reject the modern theory of evolution? Seeking answers, the author became a regular attendee at creationist conferences and other gatherings. After ten years of attending events like the giant Creation Mega-Conference in Lynchburg, Virginia, and visiting sites like the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky, and after hundreds of mostly friendly conversations with creationists of varying stripes, he has emerged with a story to tell, a story that goes well beyond the usual stereotypes of Bible-thumping fanatics railing against coldly rational scientists. Through anecdotes, personal reflections, and scientific and philosophical discussion, the author presents a more down-to-earth picture of modern creationism and the people who espouse it. He also tells the story of his own nonbeliever's attempt to understand a major aspect of American religion. Forced to wrestle with his views about religion and science, the author found himself drawn into a new world of ideas previously unknown to him, arriving at a sharper understanding of the reality of science versus religion disputes, and how these debates look to those beyond the ivory tower.Less

In this chapter, the author explores the problem of evil after seeing exhibits about Adam and Eve's disobedience during his visit to the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky. Many of the exhibits relate to science in general and to evolution in particular, but the museum is primarily devoted to a particular view of the Bible. The author considers the problem of evil from the point of view of Christianity before turning to a discussion of two fundamental distinctions: the first is between the “logical” and the “evidential” forms of the argument and the second is between “moral evil” and “natural evil.” He also tackles the idea that the sorts of natural laws leading to Darwinian evolution are the only ones that could have fulfilled God's purposes.Less
