This chapter starts with the story of Salvian of Lérins (fifth century), his comment on Christ's neediness, and the relationship between his personal biography and his advocacy for more attention to social justice for the poor. The chapter then moves to the present to explore the personal nature of need as it intersects with Christian social action. Personal need is complex and influences even the most “selfless” acts. “Sensing” need must begin with “remembering” personal needs and encounters with neediness. This chapter uses memoir extensively to relate to the author' personal journey to the study of early Christian texts on poverty and to reflect on the paradox of monastic models of solitude, boundaries, and charity, leading the reader toward a new perspective for engaging with need in other people.Less

This chapter examines social responsibility in relation to biblical faith and Christian social action in the grace of God that is present through the death of Jesus Christ. It first considers Christian ethics and how it corresponds to God's acts of grace before turning to a discussion of social actions associated with grace. It then explores the biblical concept of social ethic as opposed to community ethic and concludes by arguing that responsibility for the neighbor in the early church extended beyond the Christian community.Less

More
The foodbank network The Trussell Trust does not only give emergency food supplies, but also offers emotional support and a growing range of practical projects via the More Than Food programme to help tackle poverty-related issues. The mission is to bring communities together to end hunger and poverty in the UK by providing compassionate, practical help while challenging injustice. This chapter details the different programmes The Trussell Trust have devised and thereby examines some external challenges the London network faces. The chapter concludes that poverty and hunger are often amplified through social isolation. It suggests that more work needs to be done in order to increase collaboration across sectors, and specifically between the government, third sector, and businesses. There is increased need for more community life, and the fostering of social relations appears ever greater.
