This chapter outlines the homology of Catholic and Chinese heathen obeisance and shows how the history of debate on Chinese obeisance was reinvoked in the simultaneous condemnation of both Catholic and Chinese idolatry. It explains that Protestant polemics against Roman confession reveal distinctive attitudes toward ritual, obeisance, and the body and that Western missionaries consistently applied anti-Catholic categories to Chinese religion. It suggests that the contrast between Protestant and Chinese beliefs influenced not only representations of China but also the lived experienced of missionaries and converts.Less
