Lady Elgin was two months pregnant when the Phaeton set sail from Portsmouth. She felt very sick and uncomfortable throughout the voyage and no medical treatment could ease her condition. As such, the boat had to stop at a port so that she could rest. While the start of the voyage appeared pleasant for everyone else, there were some conflicts. Some of those involved felt some indifference towards Lord Elgin and were generally having second thoughts. Another cause of annoyance to Captain Morris was how an American frigate had joined the journey as the Phaeton had passed Lisbon. This chapter discusses the highlights of the voyage.Less
