This chapter provides an overview of the California math policy. It elaborates on its goals and objectives and the actions that implementers need to undertake. The reformers' main aim was to improve students' learning and quality of schoolwork with the development of new mathematical ideas and strategies, new student assessment, and replacement unit workshops. The success of this new policy depends upon substantial opportunities for teachers to improve mathematics teaching and learning. Where teachers had opportunities to learn about student materials or assessments, students had higher scores on state mathematics assessment.Less
