Chapter 3 reports the outcomes of research carried out in Ireland on the provision and uptake of CPD amongst social workers. The research was based on a national survey and interviews and focus groups with practitioners. This chapter provides an overview of the different forms of CPD undertaken by social workers (including higher education courses, in-service training and peer support groups); social workers’ motives for undertaking CPD; and the perceived outcomes and impact on practice. This is followed by a discussion of social workers’ preferred forms of CPD, and how it might be developed in the future. The findings are reported in the wider context of the development of social work and social work education in Ireland.Less
