This chapter examines in detail and then traces the subsequent legacies of Dearden's early film career in comedy productions and Relph's formative work in theatre and film design. On the one hand this provides an analysis of the ways in which their work featured often overlooked forms of film comedy (from George Formby and Will Hay to Ealing and beyond), and on the other, Relph's abiding interest and expertise in Film Design and Art Direction, including his Academy Award nomination for their Saraband for Dead Lovers (1948). The chapter outlines their respective ‘apprenticeships’ in theatre and film work prior to their partnership and then considers the contributions that these early days made to their work together.Less
