This book is about the transformation of urban space and the reordering of the demographic character of Brickfields, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Kuala Lumpur. The book offers an ethnographic account of the complex attempts on the part of the state and the community to reconcile techno-rational conceptions of law, development, and city planning with local experiences of place, justice, relatedness, and possibilities for belief in an aggressively changing world. The book combines classic methods of anthropological research and an engagement with the work of theorists such as Gilles Deleuze and Henri Lefebvre, and moves beyond previous studies of Southeast Asian cities by linking larger conceptual issues of ethics, belief, and experience to the concrete trajectories of everyday urban life in the region.Less

This chapter centers on different issues of urban life and transformation that are discussed throughout the book. It first addresses the scandal that occurred in the Jalan Chan Ah Tong field in Brickfields, a community in Kuala Lumpur that serves as the setting for most of the discussions in the preceding chapters. This is then followed by a discussion about urban life in this community, an analysis of the importance of the Malaysian case towards a better understanding of urban life and transformation not just in the country, but in Asia as a whole as well. From here the chapter turns to a description of Brickfields. Finally it gives a brief rundown of the following chapters and a discussion of the ethnographic methods that were used for this book.Less

This chapter provides a rundown of Brickfields' prewar history. It presents the area's development as a distinctive neighbourhood in Kuala Lumpur, within the context of Kuala Lumpur's development as the capital of colonial Malaya. It further states that the development of Brickfields was the result of various forces (i.e. economic, social, and political) that created and helped define certain social groups. Part of the chapter is devoted to a summary of the many uses and understandings of the concept of urban space in colonial Malaya, as well as an explanation of how conflicts over the proper form of the city emerged and how the conflicts were addressed by these social groups.Less
