Across the modern Americas, any given nation would give utmost importance to its relationship with the United States. The United States and Brazil, in particular, share notable links. The USA courted Brazil during and after World War II because of the country's size and how it housed a rich collection of resources. Although the two countries fostered literary ties through various interfaces, a number of Brazilian artists adopted an antagonistic view to the United States. A different transamerican ethic is shown in Brazilian lyric—particularly in the use of English and various intertextual gestures—that presents connections to the two literary domains.Less

In addressing the questions that may arise from the previous investigations into Brazilian lyric, this concluding chapter points to a textual experiment which involves fractured verses in order to arrive at a lyric disassociation with the past that demonstrates the biogeographically defined native locale on performance's cerebral aspect. Insularity as a poetic motif is able to provide links to the history of Brazil and its neighboring countries within the hemisphere. Although language remains a difficult issue to address, cultural variety's insularity is lessened through utilizing Spanish, English, and communication media. It is also important to note that exploring other languages is important in transamerican poetics so that commonalities may be identified. Indeed, words, lines, books, and other elements of lyric can provide new perspectives regarding environments and human landscapes.Less

This volume explores how recent Brazilian lyric engages with its counterparts throughout the Western Hemisphere in an increasingly globalized world. The study focuses on the years from 1985 to the present and examines poetic output—from song and visual poetry to discursive verse—across a range of media. At the core of the author's work are in-depth examinations of five phenomena: the use of the English language and the reception of American poetry in Brazil; representations and engagements with U.S. culture, especially with respect to film and popular music; epic poems of hemispheric solidarity; contemporary dialogues between Brazilian and Spanish American poets; and the innovative musical, lyrical, and commercially successful work that evolved from the 1960s movement Tropicalia.Less
