This chapter examines the interrelationship of spirituality and documentary in Herzog’s body of work. It begins with a brief look at Huie’s Sermon (1980), an observational documentary focusing on the body of the believer and on the intensity of movement generated by faith. The discussion of Bells from the Deep (1993) marks the core of this chapter. It shows how pilgrimage serves as the quintessential form of ecstatic journey for Herzog and how that journey is imagined in terms of body, vision, and movement. The chapter then closes with an analysis of Pilgrimage (2001), a rare compilation film, and reflects on the interaction of music and moving images.Less
