This chapter looks at Barnstorm, an annual workshop in upstate New York that brings together a hundred young photographers and many of the US image industry's “heavies.” It consisted of two types of activities: those that focused on photography as a profession, or even vocation, and those that focused on each student's individual development. Barnstorm 2003 was the last led by its charismatic founder, photojournalist Eddie Adams, before his death. It was also the first Barnstorm after the beginning of the American war in Iraq and brought together many photographers who had taken iconic war photographs—from Joe Rosenthal and his Flag Raising at Iwo Jima to Nick Ut and his image of a young Kim Phuc and her napalm burns.Less

This chapter offers an extended discussion of how the best tennis players in the world barnstormed across the United States and around the world as a small group of touring professionals in the 1950s. Jack Kramer had retired from playing but promoted the professionals through his World Professional Tennis Incorporated. Kramer secured some television time for his players as well as consolidating his relationship with sporting goods manufacturers such as Wilson. Touring professionals such as Pancho Gonzales, Frank Sedgman, and Pancho Segura, played grueling matches night-after-night on gymnasium floors from coast-to-coast.Less
